May Market Highlights
Markets ended May on a strong note. The TSX rose 5.5%, its best monthly performance since November, fueled by easing global trade tensions and a limited deal between the U.S., UK, and China. Investor sentiment held steady even as Canada’s core inflation data came in hotter than expected and bank earnings delivered mixed results.
U.S. markets also edged higher. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq both posted gains, supported by improving economic data and cautious optimism from the Federal Reserve, which emphasized a data-dependent approach to future rate decisions. Economic indicators such as durable goods orders and consumer sentiment painted a slightly stronger picture, helping to stabilize market expectations heading into June.
Despite the broader gains, sector performance was uneven. Energy and materials stocks faced headwinds from falling commodity prices, while technology and consumer discretionary sectors led the rally. With interest rates holding steady and inflation trends still unclear, investors remained focused on upcoming central bank commentary and June economic releases for direction.
